Please note that some new cubes when being used for the first few times may experience what is termed a "pop". This is when one or more parts of a puzzle pop out without any damage actually being done to any of the pieces. This also occurs from time to time during normal usage. Pops are typically not considered a defect if the parts which come off can be reassembled by hand.

It's all sorts of lubey out of the box. It doesn't corner cut well and the inner layers catch very easily. It's a great puzzle for just solving, definitely not for speed.
OOTB I was not too happy with this cube. It was quite sandy in turning and a bit tight. I lubed it with DNM and Silk and loosened the screws about an eighth of a turn. It seems a lot more pleasant to turn now after about 5 solves. It's a little on the bigger end, so if you have small hands I'd recommend a smaller 8x8. I'd give this cube 4 stars but the only beef I have with it is it still catches/ locks up which is annoying when you're in the middle of an algo. I haven't tried any other 8x8s so I have nothing to compare it with but all in all, I'd say it's not a bad cube, but definitely not the best.
Smooth turning on all layers. Decent corner cutting (not an important factor). Quite fast to be speed solvable. Does not pop, or lock up. Add some Silk and Dnm-37 or Cosmic lube ( Lunar or Martian). Simple review nothing else. Get this or the CB (Cyclone Boys).
This big boy is a total upgrade to the Huanglong and MF8 and cyclone boys. At $31, it has all the great values a cube needs (except corner-cutting(you shouldn’t corner cut on big cubes, because it will lock up and pop)). The turning was smooth and very buttery out of the box. It has nice shades and the size is manageable. It is way faster and more controllable than the MF8 and it doesn’t lock up and pop as much as the MF8 making this speed solve able . If the 8x8 was a WCA event, I’m sure this cube would be a big choice for many speedsolvers. This is cube is totally underrated. Not a budget 8x8, the best premium 8x8. I wish Shengshou had made a Magnetic version of this for better quality. Overall I definitely would recommend this cube.
I don't know if this is what they were thinking when they named the cube, but tanks are heavy, slow, and rugged. My iniital impression OOTB was that this tank was going to be rough turning and prone to lockups, pops, and die a premature death in my clumsy hands. I added a drop of Moyu V1 to each layer & that improved turning significantly. Then I popped out a few pieces and added a couple of drops to the core. After two solves, this has become one slick puzzle. Or at least the turning is tolerable, with only the occasional slight lockup.
I have a MF6 & MF7 (MF7S ?) with broken cores, one due to rough turning, and the other was dropped on a concrete floor. So I thought I'd try a different brand. I thought that the mini cubes might have more finicky mechanisms, so I went for this size. I find the weight & size a bit unwieldy, and a 3X3 seems foreign after spending time on this cube.
Hey folks, you should review everything you buy, because if you don't the reviews can become skewed quite easily. I didn't really consider the G8 because there were no reviews. Some one must have bought one by now, you'd think.
I have had so many hours of fun with this 8x8! It’s definitely in my top 5 favorite cubes, and they’re not even WCA.
Out of the box, the cube is a little bit greasy (as you would expect from a ShengShou), but all you need to do is wipe it down. The size is perfect for my larger hands, and that alone adds style points. I absolutely love the shades. Good contrast, and in my opinion they make the cube unique and visually appealing. This cube generates tons of interest every time I take it out.
When it comes to turning, the tensions were good right out of the box. The outer layers are incredibly smooth. Even the inner layers are nice. I don’t have as much trouble with alignment as I do with my smaller-sized big cubes. I’ve never had a pop. I don’t even recall having a lock-up, but if I did then 1) I was tearing through a solve faster than I should have been and 2) it was very minor.
All in all, if you’re looking for an 8x8 or thinking about getting into big cubes, this one has been fantastic for me! I would highly recommend it.
For it's price it's actually really good. I don't think you could speed solve with it, but it has great turning and great shades. At first it seemed really unstable, but after doing a solve on it, it held together the whole time. I'm surprised more people haven't bought and/or reviewed the cube. all in all it's a good budget cube and is underrated.
needs tension adjustment out of the box but has great turning, decent stability, and amazing stickerless shades
